The month-old homegrown luxury beauty label uses cinnamon, Kashmiri walnuts and Jatamansi root for a one-hour curated treatment
Winter is harsh on your hair, making it dryer, coarser and as a result, more dull. Just in time to perk up for spring time, and get ready for that Valentine’s Day getaway, SOVA has introduced a hair ritual that can give you that silky soft finish.
Set up by Vasavdatta Gandhi, who comes from a pharmaceutical background; and Sneha Daftary, who owns and runs luxury hair salon Vous in Mumbai, SOVA blends Ayurveda with modern science for its homegrown products. The month-old beauty brand sources ingredients from all over India and has a manufacturing unit in Maharashtra. They currently offer a range of shampoos, conditioners, oils, soaps and lotions packed with components such as bitter orange flower, Jatamansi root, Kashmiri walnuts, Yava and Coorgi narangi. SOVA’s products do not have an overpowering scent, as some other Indian brands tend towards.
The hair ritual is a four-step process available at Daftary’s salon, and recommended once a week. BlackBook took it to the test.
Step 1: SOVA Brahmi and Hibiscus Hair Oil
This step involves a thorough 10-minute scalp massage, with varying pressure points and an overall calming effect. According to SOVA, the product is made of 16 cold-compressed oils of roots, seeds and stems that are tested to strengthen your hair roots. Hibiscus accentuates hair growth, and the oil contains Vintamin C and essential fatty acids, along with Shikakai, known to be a superfruit for hair, softening it.
Step 2: SOVA Jatamansi Root and Indian Rose Shampoo
The gentle shampoo contains the Himalayan Jatamansi root, which acts as a cleanser. The product is especially recommended for treated hair, since it can trap in your hair colour to make it last longer.
Step 3: SOVA Yava and Rosemary Intense Repair Mask
The protein-rich mask is applied to your freshly washed hair, and kept on for 10 minutes. The blend includes quinoa extract, which SOVA says will strengthen the hair shaft; Yava or barley to hydrate dry hair.
Step 4: SOVA Kashmiri Walnut and Violet Flower Anti-Frizz Serum
The mask is washed off, and the serum is sprayed on slightly damp hair. Its violet flowers are meant to infuse life into dull hair, giving it a silky-soft finish.
The ritual ends with a blow dry.
BlackBook verdict: We tested the ritual on two types of hair—wavy, slightly dry hair; and thick, smooth, normal hair. Both patrons came out with tresses feeling lighter and looking shinier. The effect lasted two days.
