Come August, the international auction house will host a series of special exhibitions and talks to educate new collectors

One of the most exciting sales at Christie’s this summer was the handbags and accessories auction in New York, from May 29 to June 19. From $700 to $7,000, the auction offered a number of luxury bags including a runway Chanel evening bag, a rare Hermes Kelly Picnic, Limited Edition Hermes Kelly Au Trot and a Louis Vuitton trunk for its international collectors.

Luxury handbags and watches are catching the fancy of collectors across the globe, including India. The buyers here are now looking beyond paintings and sculpture and are spending on handbags, watches and also jewellery, says Sonal Singh, Head of Department of South Asian and Modern Contemporary Art, Christie’s., Mumbai.

“There is a growing interest in luxury among young Indian buyers,” says Singh. “These smaller, easy-to-collect objects are more accessible in terms of price and serve as a great entry point into building a collection,” says Singh. Going by the growing sentiment, Christie’s India plans to host special luxury exhibitions here to introduce collectors to different collections. They also plan to conduct a series of lectures, discussion and courses on collecting luxury items and to inform and educate the buyers. In the meanwhile, check out their online auction on 9th July.
